Passive Voice (الفِعلُ لِلمَجهولِ)

In English, we have the Active Voice and the Passive Voice (الفِعلُ لِلمَجهولِ). In Arabic, the concept is the same:

Active Voice

Refers to ordinary sentences with a known doer Khalid wrote the letter خالدٌ كَتَــبَ الرسالةَ

Passive Voice (The Unknown Doer)

The sentence tells us what was done or what received the action, but the doer is unknown or unimportant. The letter was written كُتِــبَتْ الرسالةُ

It is often used in the news or official documents

How to Form the Passive Verb

The Passive Verb (الفِعْلُ لِلْمَجْهُول - The Unknown Doer) is formed differently for the past and present tenses:

The Past Tense (المَاضِي)ــُ ــِ ــَ

The first letter takes a ــُــ, the second-to-last letter takes a ــِــ

شُرِبَ سُـمِــعَ رُفِـــعَ تُــقَــرِّبَ

The Present Tense (المُضَارِع) ـُـ ــ ــَ ــ

The first letter takes a ــُـ, the second-to-last letter takes a ــَـ

يُــشْــرَبُيُــسْــمَــعُيُــرْفَــعُيُــتَــقَــرَّبُ
